"All the world's a stage, And all the men and women merely players; They have their exits and their entrances, And one man in his time plays many parts" Williams Shakespeare
Unveiling Theatre’s Hidden World: Zoe James-Williams' Backstage Paintings
Zoe James-Williams’ theatre paintings offer a rare and evocative glimpse into the world behind the curtain. Her expressive brushwork captures the contrast between the onstage spotlight and the quiet intensity of the wings—where performers prepare, crews work tirelessly, and magic takes shape away from the audience’s gaze.
Zoe has collaborated with a wide range of productions in prestigious venues including Swansea Grand Theatre, The London Coliseum, Wales Millennium Centre, and most recently, The Royal Opera House.
As the first Official Artist in Residence at Swansea Grand Theatre (2009–2012), Zoe was granted unique access to rehearsals, backstage areas, and live performances. This allowed her to document the rich, unseen layers of theatre life—working alongside companies such as Welsh National Opera, The National Theatre, and artists including Bill Wyman, as well as local theatre groups.
Her paintings tell the untold stories of theatre—of discipline, emotion, fleeting moments, and the artistry that happens both on and off stage.
