I taught a great class inspired by Georgia O Keefe. Such was her love of nature and flowers that she tended to focus in on them and fill up the whole paper. Using watercolour all the classes were given my photo (below right) that I took of a bowl of fruit and also shown O'Keefe's paintings including the one below left. Then taking two L Shaped pieces of paper selected a segment of the photo that they wanted to paint. I used this exercise to look at composition and watercolour techniques. I also advised to add little bit of linear ink on the plate which adds a good contrast! You can see the wide variety of paintings that were produced. They all look very sumptuous!
Always practice something from life, just a little watercolour study every day. Like a pianist practising their scales. I love picking things from the kitchen like onions, tomatoes, whatever is around!!
